Past continuous (şimdiki zamanın hikâyesi)
Past continuous, geçmişte belirli bir anda devam eden eylemi anlatır; çoğu zaman daha kısa bir eylemin arka planıdır. Biçimi: was / were + fiil-ing. Türkçedeki -(I)yordu ekine karşılık gelir.

Kullanımlar
- Geçmişte bir an: At 8 pm I was watching TV.
- Bölünen eylem: when + past simple, while + past continuous.
- Aynı anda iki eylem: She was reading while he was cooking.

Sık yapılan hatalar
- ✗ I was sleep when the alarm rang.✓ I was sleeping when the alarm rang.Past continuous was / were + -ing ile kurulur: I was sleeping. Türkçedeki -yordu eki tek parçadır, İngilizcede iki parça gerekir.
- ✗ I were working when you came.✓ I was working when you came.I ile geçmişte was kullanılır, were değil: I was working. Were sadece you, we ve they içindir.
- ✗ While I was cooking, she was call me.✓ While I was cooking, she called me.Arka plandaki uzun eylemi bölen kısa eylem past simple olur: she called me. Was call yanlış bir karışımdır.
- ✗ When I was arriving, they were eating.✓ When I arrived, they were eating.Varış kısa ve bitmiş bir eylemdir, bu yüzden when arrived ile past simple gelir; devam eden eylem were eating olur.
- ✗ She was knowing the answer.✓ She knew the answer.Know gibi durum fiilleri continuous olmaz: she knew. Türkçedeki “biliyordu” bu yüzden İngilizceye -ing ile çevrilmez.
