What does -miş express?

  • On other tenses -miş always means “heard” or “just noticed”; the first suffix shows the time.
  • Sudden discovery: *Sen Türkçe biliyormuşsun!* (Oh, you speak Turkish!).
  • In the first person it often means “without noticing”: *Uyuyakalmışım* (I must have dozed off).
  • A guess from evidence is -meli instead: *Ali hasta olmalı* (Ali must be ill).

Common mistakes

  • ✗ Yarın okullar tatil olmalı. (= I heard it)✓ Yarın okullar tatil olacakmış. (= I heard it)English “schools are supposed to be closed” is hearsay; that is -miş, while -meli is your own conclusion (“must”).
  • ✗ Ali taşınmışacak.✓ Ali taşınacakmış.The tense comes first and -miş after it: taşın-acak-mış.
  • ✗ Sen çok güzel yemek yapıyorsun! (surprised, I didn't know)✓ Sen çok güzel yemek yapıyormuşsun! (surprised, I didn't know)English shows surprise with tone (“Oh, you cook really well!”); Turkish shows it with -miş.
  • ✗ Film çok güzelymiş.✓ Film çok güzelmiş.The buffer -y- is only needed after a vowel; after the l of güzel it is just -miş.
  • ✗ Siz çok çalışıyorsunuzmuş.✓ Siz çok çalışıyormuşsunuz. The personal ending comes last, after -muş: çalışıyor-muş-sunuz.
